ECP T-shirts Design Competition, 2nd annual volume

Hello,

The purpose and rules of this competition are the same, as they were one year ago. The aim is to obtain a design for the proposed sale of the English College t-shirts and sweatshirts.

The winner of the competition will be awarded a t-shirt for free.

The design either in the form of a logo or a picture must be somehow related to The English College in Prague.

The design must not contain any pornographic, obscene, racist or in any other way offensive content.

We also need to inform you that higher colour diversity will result in higher price of the t-shirt, but the final decision will be up to you.

Software made designs (.jpg, .gif, etc.) are preferred; please send these to ecp_design@yahoo.com. Designs that are drawn on paper should be provided to your SC representative

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The victorious design may not be necessarily accepted by the supplier due to technical reasons; that is why the winning design will be accompanied by the other two best designs, so that in case of problems it can be replaced by another favourite design. In this case the winner shall still receive a t-shirt for free and the creator of the design that will be printed will be also awarded a t-shirt.

The deadline is set for 21st April 2007, then the proposed designs will be shown around the school to the students and one week later we shall have a vote about the best piece of work (Further details will be given to you soon)

Designs that will fail to meet the required criteria will be automatically rejected.

Monday Morning Café. New solution for Cake Sales?

Michaela Danek and Petra Spanihelova have recently introduced their project called the Monday Morning Café.

The purpose of this event is very simple; selling coffee, tea and some sweets on Monday morning.

For long years the Student Council has been discussing how to improve the Cake Sales and make them more attractive for people, unfortunately none of the managements was able to find a solution. One ex-president even thought that renaming the Cake Sale to Italian "Rinfreschi" could help solve the problem. Luckily sensibility prevailed and after a one year pause we resumed using the good old "Cake Sale" call-sign.

After one year of being in charge of the SC, I thought that the best solution would be decreasing the intensity (amount) of Cake Sales, but meanwhile make each Cake Sale more special and perhaps a bigger event with a greater turnover.

However the Monday Morning Café seems to be a very good solution. There are several advantages arising from it. First of all, Monday is the important beginning of each week when all the people tend come tired and apathetic in the morning; so there is no better way to start the week than by drinking a cup of the "caffeine catalyst" which gives a person a lot of energy to successfully begin a new day. Secondly, preparing a Monday Morning Café involves only two people for organisation and running, instead of at least 5-7 needed for a Cake Sale, so making a MM Café is not so complicated, in order not to intrude in to people's timetable there could be 4-5 volunteers for the whole year who could rotate. Lastly MM Café proved to be very profitable, one sale earned up to 400 CZK; multiplied by 4 we 1600 CZK per month which is an important source of income throughout the whole year.

Overall, MM Café is very promising project for the future of the SC.

English College Madness- ECP's first pc game

Welcome to crap, but English College game that we “proudly” present. It is a 2D game consisting of three levels. Nothing special, nevertheless we hope that it will entertain you.

We decided to create the game using Game Maker. Not because it is the easiest and least time consuming tool for making pc-games. But, because it also enables us to distribute the game in an editable file; so that any one can modify and improve the game according to his/her taste, regardless whether they are skilled programmers or not.

English College Madness! v1.0
Welcome to the worst software night-mare that world has ever seen, nevertheless it is the work of the English College, so be proud of it!

The game is split into three levels. The purpose is to collect as much points as possible.

Level 1; you are located inside a play-room with three monsters, which are pursuing you everywhere you go. And you are in danger of exploding in case that they will catch you.
What you need to do is; lead those monsters towards one of the mines (explosives) which are also located inside the play-room. If you will succeed in doing so, then you will progress into Level 2!

Level 2; is basically a platform-game where you have to jump around, avoid collision with bugs, collect mushrooms and try to reach the "FINISH" sign and proceed to Level 3. You can kill some of the bugs by jumping on their head + there is a "pleasant" surprise awaiting you inside the level.

Level 3; you are flying in a space ship, trying to shoot down your enemies a trying to avoid collision with your enemies and their shots.

Controls:

FAQ:

1. May I distribute the game?
- The game is for distribution within the English College. Its distribution outside the ECP through internet or CD-ROM is permitted.

2. May I re-program the game?
- Yes you can, as long as you make it available for everyone else at the ECP and as long as it is not offensive or otherwise inappropriate. We provide you with an englcoll.gm6 editable file (this game file) that you may edit using Game Maker that you need to download from http://www.gamemaker.nl.

3. Why did you make the game using "amateur" Game-Maker?
- There was no one in the Student Council who was able to do the programming, e.g. in Visual Basic and we did not have time to recruit a team of people who possessed these skills. So, we decided to do it in Game Maker; fast and simple solution + Game Maker enabled us to distribute the game in gm6 editable file that every one can modify easily according to his desire (but he/she needs to download Game Maker @ http://www.gamemaker.nl).

4. Don't you think that game is rather bizarre or crap?
- Yes it is, but we like it the way it is. You can re-edit it according to your taste, if you don't like it and if you wish to do so.

5. Where can I report bugs and errors?

The first SC meeting of this school year had the pleasure to welcome several new members. We are very proud to introduce:

We are also preparing for the SC Chairman elections. Last year SC spent the whole month preparing the elections. Considering the fact that we want to be as much productive as possible, we decided to appoint Petr Mikyska to be in charge of the entire election preparation, so that we can keep focusing at the given agenda and other necessary work.

SC again plans to have two assemblies (one for the Lower School and one for the Upper School) during PSE periods where the candidates will have the opportunity to introduce themselves and their aims, and also run a discussion on various topics that are concerning you. Petr Mikyska will be the moderator of this discussion.

The projected date for the election is Friday, 6th October 2006.

Although on Friday the weather was very hot and exams ended, we had a very beautiful Concert and Summer Barbecue.

We would like to thank Back to Basics for their last concert that was their all-time best and we all adored them. We also want to congratulate No Idea for their first concert which was very good and it will be our pleasure to hear them again in the future.

International Day - excuse to everyone

Dear tutors, fellow students,

On behalf of the Student Council I would like to apologise for the indecent, incorrect an uncomfortable style in which we have been running the preparations for the International Day.

We consider your criticisms as justified and we are prepared to provide you with all the necessary assistance in order to rectify the errors that have occurred.

Sadly the person responsible for the event had an unexpected car crash which forced her to spend some time out of school, during which time we were unable to contact her and take over her work which we should have done regardless of all the difficulties.

Despite the unfortunate development mentioned above I do not deny my full responsibility for what has happened.

What has happened is misfortunate, but we have always worked for the benefit of all of us, treating everyone politely and respectfully and we do hope that we will be treated in the same manner.

Once again, we apologise and we are looking forward to future co-operation and we trust in the success of the International Day.

The Student Council Constitution - how is it going to look like?

Hello,

we have already mentioned once the newly planned SC Constitution, but we have never published any further information regarding this issue. So, there are some basic facts.

Central Aim: The Student Council (SC) is an English College in Prague institution whose agenda is primarily focused on students' interests. Student Council considers all the desires and opinions as equally important and takes them into account.

New modifications:

Finance: The management is obliged to keep the finance in a stable and profitable state (meaning that the SC account balance must not get into "red numbers"; negative values). The SC management should ask for financial help from school as least as possible (if possible not at all).

Charity: Student Council is obliged to carry out at least one charitable activity annually. Such a charitable activity must not endanger the future financial independence and balance that could therefore disable any activity or existence of the SC.

Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Treasurer: The Chairman must be only from Years 6 and 5. The Vice-Chairman can be from Years 6,5 and 4. The Treasurer can be from any Year (except for Year 1).

Elections: Two candidates can unite and run together for the functions of SC Chairman and SC Vice-Chairman. OR The victorious SC Chairman candidate can appoint his/her Vice-Chairman.

Administration: Members of the SC can form into opinion groups that will unite opinions together into a more organised form; these opinion groups can have members outside the SC, so that students who are not members of the SC have a greater chance to influence the decisions made within the SC.

Common Responsibility: The SC management is obliged fulfil at least one promise given before the elections as a sign of respect towards the voters (students) in order to comply with the general philosophy set forth in the Central Aim.

International Day 2005/06 at The English College in Prague

Aim: To highlight the multi-national and multi-cultural atmosphere that we are proud to have at The English College and to provide the students with more knowledge about individual nations that are represented at the College.

Fulfilment: Each tutor group (from years 1, 2, 4 and possibly 5) will be given one nationality which is represented at the English College; the tutor groups are then going to prepare a short (maximum 5 min.) presentation which is going to be presented at one of the 2 assemblies which will take place on Wednesday, 31st May and Wednesday, 7th June 2006. The presentation should be done in some intelligent and humorous style. The best presentation will be chosen by a Commission made up of Student Council representatives, teachers and other members of staff.

Merit: The victorious tutor group is going to be awarded with a day-out of school. The day-out may have some educational purposes in order to comply with the standards that are required by the Czech School Laws.

today the Asian New Year was held at the English College. The Asian students have undoubtably prepared a perfect event, that has very beautifuly and decently expressed the depth and wealth of the Asian culture that we are proud to have present at the English College in Prague.

Those who did not come have unfortunately for them missed a lot, starting up with the delicious specialities such as sushi and spring rolls or various other interesting activities such as caligraphy or Chinese chess.

Student Council Meeting Minutes, 10th January 2006

This was the Student Council´s first meeting held in 2006.

Anh Do Hai is gradually leaving the Student Council after 5 years of hard work; due o her IB duties. On behalf of everyone in the Student Council I would like to thank her for everything that she has done and wish her good luck during IB Exams

Anja´s function as the Treasurer of SC will be taken over by Daniel Slezak (4SE), Congratulations!

We are intending to create a new Student Council Constitution that would bring changes to the functioning and structure of SC.

We have set the price for roses at the Valentine's Day. They will be sold for 40 CZK each

We haven't forgotten about the Table-Soccer issue (commonly regarded as Fotbálek). According to the latest information there is a big demand for table-soccer accompanied by a lower supply which result in prices being around 8000 CZK; these are higher than the value that SC could provide. That is why we are standing infront of a decision whether to switch to "Plan B" and buy the complementary and cheaper alternative of Table-Hockey (meanwhile continue in our long-term aspirations to obtain Table-Soccer) or find the cheapest available Table-Soccer which might not be so good.

Christmas Fair

On Friday, 2nd December 2005, the English College in Prague held its annual Christmas Fair. This year’s aim was to earn money for the construction of a secondary school in Northern Afghanistan.

The prepared stalls included goods and services starting up with food and refreshment and ending up with Christmas Cards and board games. Among the most interesting activities, was the Year 5 tombola where the main prize was a small TV set.

We can see music being increasingly popular among the stalls through out the years, as we had a Year 3 Christmas Disco and a beautiful piano performance by Year 1. Nevertheless the main peak of the night was a LIVE AT CHRISTMAS concert performed by the English College school-band “Back to Basics” who made an astonishing and unforgettable concert that included hits such as Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” or AC/DC’s ”Back in Black”

We are glad that also other charity and good-will organisations such as UNICEF or Náruč had their stalls at our Christmas Fair.

This year’s Christmas Fair was exceptional by the introduction of a ban forbidding the sale of alcohol. Although alcohol was not being sold; the good atmosphere was a sufficient catalyst for making the Christmas Fair successful.

Finally, we would like to thank to all those who have participated and helped at the Christmas Fair.

we have the privilege to announce that the Student Supportive Website has been completed. It consists of an ECP Discussion Forum and an ECP Upload Server. Both websites are now undergoing through the phases of final testing and error correction.

ECP Discussion Forum is accessible on http://ecpsc.forumer.com. This is a special Forum designed for people to post their Questions, Replies, Advices and Announcements matching their appropriate Year. Their post can be related to their work at school or any other topic related to E.C.P. that they wish everybody to know about. e.g. John Smith from Yr. 5 would like to know, how many words does his Extend Essay need to contain? Therefore he logs on to this website and tries to obtain some information about it, from his classmates.

ECP Upload Server is accessible either on www.thepytel.ic.cz OR on www.pytel.tk. Pytel is the Czech word for "Bag"; this briefly describes the main function of this website. It is supposed to store your work (files) that you have not finished working on at school, so that you can download them comfortably at your home computer and continue working on them (it obviously works the other way round; home to school).

Special thanks belong to Hai Mac Duy (5JB) for programming the Upload Server and Jindrich Kopta (6CH) for assisting during the configuration and running of the Discussion Forum.

Halloween Cake Sale

Treasurer Report: Student Council has ended up with a 26510 CZK net profit for year 2004/05 (this includes the last Barbeque), 20000 of the last year’s net profit were donated to Adopted Children in India and Uganda, the opening cash-flow available for 2005/06 projects is 6510 CZK.

Special thanks to last year's SC Team lead by Iveta Nováková for stable opearating with the money, and Anh Do Hai (Anja) for making up of the report.

Student Council Meeting Minutes

6th Meeting, 10th October 2005

Treasurer report: Anh Do Hai is working very hard on this one; we are expected to have our annual year financial report available by next week.

Meetings: We have agreed that there will be a second regular but voluntary Student Council meeting on Friday during Break Time.

E.C.P website: We are working very actively on this issue that is why we are preparing a questionnaire about the Student Supportive website (syllabuses, deadlines, etc.) and another questionnaire about the online version of our school yearbook.

Keyboards: SC will participate on the financing of the purchase of new keyboards into the library, at this phase we are making a list of the badly functioning keyboards as well as selecting the best alternative in terms of quality and price.

Table Soccer: We have started discussing the possible ways of creating a collection for this one. There is a suggestion to finance it by organising a special event such as “Christmas Fair After-party”. We have as well selected an appropriate location which wouldn’t disturb anyone and that could prevent skipping of lessons, so that we can persuade the school about it.

Charity: Each year we are obliged to donate some proportion of the SC money to charity projects, this year we will be supporting the construction of a school in Afghanistan, in order to support the development of Afghan education which is experiencing low literacy and we feel determined to change this, because we share the idea that everyone deserves his chance for a happy life.

Dear fellowman,

7th October 2005 will undoubtably be recorded as one of my very beautiful days. It will, as well, be a day of a given promise, strong determination and responsibility which will be needed for the next 8 months.

Although I have invested lots of effort into succeeding, this couldn't have been achieved without your strong support, either in the form of your votes or your sympathies which will be the key factors for the fulfilling of the program and your desires.

I would like to assure all, icluding those who did not give me their votes that I will do my best at this function, therefore all opinions will be equally precious to me.

Finally, I would like to thank all those who have contributed to my election campaign and helped me in distributing the posters.

Student Council Meeting Minutes

5th Meeting, 3rd October 2005

Barbecue: We have already agreed about who is going to do what, and now we are undergoing the process of preparations for the St. Wenceslas Barbecue which will take place on 7th October and where the new SC President will be announced.

Elections: Each tutor will receive a specially designed ballot, on which he is going to record the number of votes for each of the candidates from his tutor group, these are then going to be collected in, and will be counted. The counting of the votes will be conducted by Mrs. Alena Švejdová and our respectful leader Iveta Nováková. The winner is then going to be announced at the Barbecue. – Special thanks belong to Jan Milík who is going to design these ballots

Year 5 Cake Sale: We are pleased to announce that next week on Thursday, 13th October at 10:25 during Break Time, there will be a Year 5 Cake Sale held in the Refectory. (NOTE: their last year’s Cake Sale was very good, so do not miss the opportunity to come!)

SC Bulletin Board: We have a newly designed SC Bulletin Board, have a look at it! You will find there all the necessary information regarding the Student Council (SC Minutes, Treasurer Report, etc.)

Visit: We are expecting a precious visit from the Člověk v Tísni foundation, further information will be provided to you soon.

Sports: Considering the fact that there are an increasing number of people wishing to play other sports than football, we are forced to make precautions that would satisfy everyone. We are also working on more frequent opening of the gym during Lunch time.
